ABSTRACT Overabundant elk (Cervus elaphus) populations have become a significant problem in many areas of North America. This is particularly true for protected areas where high densities of elk can cause long-term ecological degradation. When lethal control is not acceptable in these environments, resource managers must often consider alternative methods for reducing the size of resident elk populations. A potential management alternative is controlling the fertility of female elk. A promising new approach to wildlife contraception involves the use of biodegradable implants containing the gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonist leuprolide. During fall 2002-spring 2004, we compared pregnancy rates, reproductive behavior, daily activity patterns, and body condition of 17 free-ranging female elk treated with a leuprolide formulation with 17 untreated females, in Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado, USA. After treatment, the pregnancy rate of treated elk was 0%, whereas 79% of control elk became pregnant. The effects of treatment were reversed the subsequent year with the pregnancy rate of treated females 100% compared with 91% for controls. Reproductive behaviors were similar for treated and control elk during the breeding and postbreeding seasons; treated elk did not exhibit postrut reproductive behaviors. Moreover, we found no differences in daily activity patterns of experimental groups during the breeding or postbreeding seasons. Treated elk did not show improved body condition over pregnant females. Instead, treated females catabolized proportionately more body fat during winter after treatment and at a higher rate than pregnant control elk. However, this effect was reversed the next spring with no difference in body fat between treated and control elk. We conclude from this experiment that leuprolide, administered as a controlled release formulation, offers a safe and effective method of controlling fertility in free-ranging female elk. However, practical application is limited by treatment duration and the need to treat females before the breeding season.  相似文献

Granite outcrops represent an isolated island habitat and, in ancient landscapes, may harbour species with complex evolutionary histories. Phylogenetic analysis of these species may reveal the influences of evolutionary processes over long time frames. Phylogenetic relationships from chloroplast and nuclear genome analysis were investigated in Eucalyptus caesia , a bird-pollinated mallee endemic to granite outcrops in the South-western Australian Floristic Region. The results obtained revealed high population and haplotype divergence, suggesting restriction to the specific habitat of granite outcrops over long time frames with genetic drift as the most significant evolutionary force. The hypothesis of derivation of ssp. magna from ssp. caesia was not supported by the pattern of diversity in either the chloroplast or the nuclear genome and the two subspecies were not monophyletic. Eucalyptus caesia displays significant clonality yet little evidence of inbreeding depression, suggesting deleterious mutations causing inbreeding depression have been purged.  © 2008 Department of Environment and Conservation. 1. Nucleotide sequences of a 280 base pair region of the cytochrome b gene were used to assess genetic diversity and to infer population histories in the New Zealand mayfly Acanthophlebia cruentata. 2. A hierarchial examination of populations from 19 streams at different spatial scales in the central and northern North Island of New Zealand found 34 haplotypes. A common haplotype was found in all central region streams and unique haplotypes in northern streams. Several central streams had region specific haplotypes with genetically differentiated populations at the 70–100 km scale. 3. Haplotype diversity was high (0.53–0.8) at most sites, but low (0–0.22) in some central sites. amova analyses found significant genetic diversity among regions (69%) and among catchments (58%). Most population pairwise FST tests were significant, with non‐significant pairwise tests among sites in the central region and pairs of sites between neighbouring streams. 4. The levels of sequence divergence are interpreted as the result of Pleistocene divergence in multiple refugia, leading to the evolution of regionally unique haplotypes. The low diversity in some central region populations may result from recent colonisation following local extinctions, associated with volcanic events.  相似文献

Habitats are now becoming increasingly fragmented throughout the world due to intense cultivation. As a consequence, populations of some animals with low mobility have become isolated, thus increasing the risk of inbreeding and local extinction. In Britain, weakly flying geometric moths of the genus Epirrita are a good model species with which to test the genetic effects of habitat fragmentation on insect populations. Genetic variation within and between populations of two Epirrita species captured using a network of light traps at two spatial scales (local and national) was assessed using allozyme electrophoresis, with particular reference to the local scale (the 330-ha arable farm estate at Rothamsted, Hertfordshire, in southern Britain). Populations sampled widely in England and Wales displayed low (but statistically significant) levels of genetic differentiation for both species ( F st  = 0.0051–0.0114 and 0.0226 for E. dilutata and E. christyi , respectively). However, analysis of large samples of E. dilutata from four small woods at Rothamsted revealed low ( F st  = 0.0046) but significant differentiation, indicating that gene flow was restricted, even at this very small scale. It was concluded that small intervening patches of farmland (often a few fields width) were enough to prevent genetic homogeneity. The close similarity between more distant Epirrita populations was considered to be a result of historical, rather than recurrent gene flow, as genetic equilibrium between drift and gene flow is unlikely over such scales.  © 2003 The Linnean Society of London . Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2003, 78 , 467–477.  相似文献

Temporal oral burn profiles for cinnamaldehyde, piperine and capsaicin were quantified using time-intensity (TI) parameters. Despite large judge-to-judge variation, TI profiles for eaters and noneaters of chile peppers differed significantly. Eaters had lower maximum intensities, shorter total times, and slower maximum rates of onset and decay. Judges with substantial desensitization also had shorter time-to-maximum intensities. Desensitized judges not only scored the burn of capsaicin as less intense, but also the burn of cinnamaldehyde and piperine. The burn of cinnamaldehyde solutions increased and decayed quickly; whereas, burns due to piperine and capsaicin increased and decayed slowly. Capsaicin compared to cinnamaldehyde, had time-to-max, plateau time, and total time that were 1.5, 2.0 and 3.0 fold larger; whereas, the maximum rates of onset and decay were 0.7 and 0.2 fold smaller, respectively. Temporal differences are believed to reflect differences in neural pathways for the irritant species.  相似文献

Light intensity was found to have a strong effect on the adaptationto high salt concentrations of a green microalga, Dunaliellaparva, normally grown at low and medium salt concentrations.At high light intensities (200 µmol m–2 s–1)the cell glycerol content increased in parallel with an increasein external salt concentration; protein synthesis and cell divisioncontinued with no period of arrest. At low light intensitiesno glycerol synthesis occurred as the external salt concentrationwas raised; protein synthesis and cell division were equallyarrested. The importance of high light intensity during theinitial phase of increase of salt concentration was demonstratedand was found to be a requirement for protein synthesis andcell division. In experiments designed to discover the effectof light intensity on cells growing in media in which the saltconcentration was kept constant, it was confirmed that the lightintensity needed for growth increases as the salt concentrationof the medium is increased. A sequence of nine, plant-macrofossil-bearing horizons has been recognized in the Lower Oligocene from the Isle of Wight, England. The plant fossils are contained in finely laminated, olive-brown to black silty-clays and clays. Some horizons exhibit rhythmic alternation of sediment couplets; others show evidence of bioturbation and rootlet penetration. These horizons are included within a sequence of finely laminated greenish grey silty-clays and clays, largely devoid of plant macrofossil material. The plant-bearing horizons contain abundant fruits, seeds, fern sporangia, Azolla megaspores, and rare leaves. The nearest living relatives of the fossils all inhabit an aquatic or marginal aquatic environment. The associated fossil fauna includes lake bottom and lake margin species. The palynoflora of the plant-bearing and immediately underlying horizons includes large numbers of planktonic algae and limited representatives of a forest vegetation. It shows a strong relationship between the occurrences of Sparganiaceaepollenites pollen and of Typha macrofossils. Palaeoecological interpretations of this plant-fossil-bearing sequence are discussed with particular reference to modern environments.
One new genus and three new species are described. Emendations are presented for four other species. Stratiotes leaf margin teeth are described.  相似文献
